The star has given the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound award prize money to the MVT, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was given the award on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts like the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits independent venues.

Fender also participated, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported spaces that were confronting possible closure due to issues stemming from flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and sound issues.

Some locations were granted funding support in modernizing facilities and gear that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The idea that money from shows in big venues supports the local stages, where it all starts for performers like me, is just common sense," Fender has said.

Fender is not the first artist to donate his award funds to charitable organizations.

Back when the band earned the award in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, frontman Cocker stated that the act would contribute their prize money to the organization the charity.

During 2002, artist Ms Dynamite split her award across multiple good causes, like the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also contributed a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they needed updated gear," she explained to outlets.

Two years ago, the band contributed their funds to the local youth club that developed their band, alongside other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners the group gave their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was identified with the condition.

"The victory was ample," stated vocalist the singer. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected another person's life."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had rescued several grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in the city were acquired under the community ownership initiative, which is funded by a national body and supporters who buy "stakes" in the properties.
