Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the public for information.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism made him without words and required to be solved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
